Old Fort Niagara has named Robert Wiltshire of East Aurora as its volunteer of the year during the historic site's annual volunteer recognition breakfast. Wiltshire has served as a volunteer at the Fort since 2005 and annually logs hundreds of volunteer hours in support of Fort projects.

Wiltshire's main interest lies in recreating the role of an 18th or early 19th century joiner. He has set up a period-correct workshop on the second floor of the French Castle. From here he conducts public demonstrations of period woodworking and hand crafts much of the reproduction furniture needed for Fort programs.

Most recently, Wiltshire restored the Augustus Porter sleigh, which was reportedly used by the Porter family to escape the British burning of the Niagara Frontier in December 1813. The restored sleigh is currently on exhibit at the Fort's Visitor Center.

During the awards ceremony, New York State Assemblywoman Jane Corwin honored Wiltshire with a citation from the New York State Assembly. She joined Niagara County Legislator Clyde Burmaster and Fort officials in honoring seventy-eight volunteers for their contributions to the Fort during 2013.
