Old Fort Niagara Seeking New Tour Guides

Wed, Mar 25th 2015 03:00 pm

(March 25, 2015) Youngstown, N.Y. - Old Fort Niagara seeks new tour guides to help lead school tours and orient everyday visitors at the historic landmark during the upcoming season. The positions are seasonal, part-time and paid or voluntary, and training is provided. Two training dates are offered for people who are interested: Mon., April 13, and Sat., May 2, 9 a.m. to noon.

Tour guides, also called docents, fulfill an important role by informing and enhancing a visitor's experience. Last year the Fort welcomed over 180,000 visitors, many of whom took a tour and learned the history and importance of the Fort. A perk of being a docent is meeting interesting people from around the world and gaining knowledge about the region's history.

The training program prepares docents by giving them historical information about Old Fort Niagara, operational details about the 22-acre historic site, and having them follow experienced guides on a tour so they can become comfortable with the pace and questions typically asked by visitors.

Docents currently working at the Fort come from a range of work and life experiences. They include retired teachers, current college students, and full-time workers who conduct tours during their leisure time. Hours are flexible based on the guide's preferences. In addition to guiding general tours of the Fort, docents also assist in the Visitor Center and Lighthouse during the summer months.

To register for docent training or for more information, contact Genevieve Montante at (716) 745-7611 ext. 221 or [email protected].
